Star wars vs Lord of the rings: How much do we like Stuff?
We usually have a lot of assumptions around how much we think we enjoy things like movies, but turns out a lot of them are wrong. Measuring our taste in things in quite difficult. I explore this along with how data science works in practice at Uncubed New York City 2014.
Starting with a simple question, I go on a journey explaining challenges of measuring how much we like movies, books, songs, or products; combining insights from diverse sources like the Netflix Prize, Duncan Watts' social experiments, and the beginnings of Facebook. The better we get at measuring and ranking levels of enjoyment, the better we can customize websites, sort search results, find other people with similar tastes, and recommend products, so can we overcome these challenges?
Drumroll...
Yes, we can, with Bayesian rating systems.
“I made the Movie versus Movie web app as a proof of concept for the ideas I explain in the talk.
Using this passion project as an example, this talk also showcases how we designed Metis Data Science Bootcamp to repeatedly go through the process of an actual data science project 5 times in 12 weeks.”
